Lean Business Systems

Efficiency, effectiveness and economy have always been good ideas, but the credit crunch has brought "Lean" to the fore again. Like so much, whether in business, public administration, or the third sector, it makes sense to achieve as much for as little as possible.  It's a lot easier to cut costs than to increase income, especially right now, but you want to be sure you lose flab not muscle.

That's where so many of the Business Process Re-engineering initiatives went wrong in the 80's - not engaging the wisdom ot the workers meant that a lot of muscle was lost, and about 70% of the initiatives were considered failures.

Getting your systems right is about more than tools and techniques, it's about your ways of thinking and acting too.  That's why so many firms found the 'Toyota way' so elusive - it was easy to copy 'what' was done, but not 'why'.

Efficient processes and systems come from doing exactly what is necessary, and doing nothing that is not necessary.

Whether you call it applied laziness or resource efficiency, it's the secret of making a little go a long way. One vital ingredient of working smarter not harder.
