I have been helping people and organisations work more effectively since the mid 1980’s, as a working manager, trainer and consultant. I started by turning around a ‘failing’ team by engaging the staff in ‘lean’ process design and implementation, although I had not heard the terms at that time. Attracted to a larger canvas, I became an internal consultant in the parent organisation. Ten years’ specialism in organisational effectiveness and efficiency led to heading a unit in a major government department, reporting to the Finance Director on the effectiveness of resource use across the organisation. Moving to the heart of government, I specialised in Quality Systems and risk management. As well as those 'day jobs', I delivered training in related skills for a public provider, with which I remain associated. Directing a primary health-care centre provided a stepping stone to embarking on my present career in independent consultancy, executive coaching and management training. During those years in organisations, I came to realise that life's too short to plod through. I saw that organisational and indeed personal success depend on more than excellent processes and high levels of skill. If you like, organisational structures are the bones, systems are the flesh, and skills are the brain - but it's an dull lifeless thing without the breath of life! That is the purpose of my work now. I may be helping you improve your business systems, advising on some aspect of corporate governance, facilitating a retreat, providing training or coaching. But the purpose of all this is simply to strengthen the bones, build the muscle and exercise the brain - to get fit for cation! Then we can get to the exciting bit - breathing life into what we want to achieve - firing up the imagination, electrifying the spirit, powering up the will. Let's Do it! |
